Overview

The National Return to Work Strategy 2020-2030 (the Strategy) is a 10-year strategy to drive and leverage national action to improve return to work outcomes for workers with a work-related injury or illness. It was endorsed by work health and safety ministers and launched in January 2020.

Evidence tells us that helping workers get back to work, or stay at work, while they recover from a workplace injury can be a difficult and at times complex process. The Strategy was developed to bring together national efforts to minimise the impact of work-related injury and illness and enable workers to have a timely, safe and durable return to work. It creates a framework to develop research, share insights and focus activity on areas with the potential for the greatest positive impact on return to work outcomes.

Mid-term review of the Strategy

Safe Work Australia is now undertaking a mid-term review of the Strategy after the first 5 years of implementation to ensure it remains influential, responsive and on track. The review will consider:

  • how effectively the Strategy drives and leverages national action to improve return to work outcomes for workers with a work-related injury or illness

  • progress against the Strategy’s strategic outcomes and towards the national targets

  • challenges or areas requiring a more dedicated focus in the remaining 5 years of the Strategy, and

  • appropriateness of existing measures and national targets for the remaining 5 years of the Strategy.

The responses obtained from this public consultation will support the analysis of the effectiveness of the Strategy in the first 5 years of implementation and assist in identifying key areas of focus for its remaining 5 years.
